Home Getting to know us Everyday Stories

Every now and then we would like to share some stories with you of some of our people who are making an everyday difference.  We hope they inspire you to go out and "write" your own story.  Enjoy!

If you hear of someone making a difference and you think we should tell their story (with their permission of course), please contact Pastor Barry.

Small Potatoes!

Have you ever had garden fresh vegetables? Have you ever tilled the soil, planted seeds, and harvested them? For the last few years, we have had some space where people can plant rows of vegetables. Whether to enjoy the fresh air, working the land, or the fresh, tasty vegetables, it's a great thing to do.

For the last two years, we've planted rows of extra potatoes. Come harvest time, we gather them up into boxes or bags and sell them for whatever someone is willing to pay. The proceeds are donated to help feed hungry and homeless people in Edmonton. Another way we are making a difference in people's lives.

Toonie Tuesdays

Every Tuesday evening at BAC a bunch of young people (and some not so young) get together for a few hours playing recreational basketball in our church gym.  A few months ago someone came up with the great idea that we should collect a loonie or two from each player each week and use that money for something that will help others less fortunate than ourselves.  So we did - and we are.

We support an 11 year old girl in the northern region of Rio Azul in Guatemala.  The money is used to help pay for school supplies, medical supplies, food and clean water and other basic life needs. It benefits her and her community.

We know it really is not that much but hey - we think it makes a difference!

KIVA and You!!!

A few weeks ago the Young Adults group and I were discussing what it is we could do to make an everyday difference for someone in the world.  What could we do?  How could we effectively make a real change in the life of someone?

During this discussion the topic of KIVA came up.  KIVA.org is a micro-lending website which connects people who want to lend money to small businesses worldwide with their respective local banks.  KIVA profiles thousands of people around the world who require funds to either start or expand their small business as local entrepreneurs.  If I desire to lend to a specific individual which KIVA has profiled I merely click on them and decide how much I want to lend.  The loan is eventually paid back over time by that individual, and ideally, you would take the money paid back to you and just lend it out again.  The minimum donation to give is $25.

Anyways, we decided as young adults to sponsor a woman in Benin, Julienne A.P. Houeto. who has a small fishing business and seeks to expand it.  She has a husband and one child in school.  Her total needs were $225 American dollars and between the 12 of us it only came to around $22 Canadian per person.  We plan to keep up with the updates KIVA sends us and keep Julienne and her family in our prayers.

I would encourage you to check out KIVA, and see how YOU can make a real difference in someone's life today!
